These Semi-Palminated Plovers, were shot in pre-dawn light, very slow speeds...

A Spoted Snadpiper at dawn, mixed clouds and sun, very dark.

A closer crop of the same bird. The trick is to work with the light you have and actually use it to create an effect.

This Song Sparrow, was on the wrong side of the sun on a clear dawn, I had to shoot for the Shadow...

I hope these images demonstrate that you can't always pick and choose in trying to get good photographs. The sun, unfortunately does not play the game to my rules...
