I really liked how this shot came outexcept for the high noise. I think my shutter was a bit fast. I maybe should have used 1/1000 or 1/1250. I'm learning here, so any feedback is welcome.....

Late afternoon light with a slow moving bird. D70s 80-400 VR: FL400mm 1/1600 F/5.6 ISO 400. post processing for light and Neat Image for noise.

Nice shot! And here's a critic...

The shot is overexposed, not under.

You are faced with the difficult problem of shooting into the sun. Never an easy thing to get away with.

The question to ask is the F stop involved. With a Heron taking off, if your are steady, 800 would have been the minimum - Perhaps narrowing the aperture?

A different angle of approach in the first place would have been ideal, but we often enough don't have that luxury.

So I would have tried for a compromise with a silouette.

No need to go THAT far but the highlights are blown...

Better a bit too dark than to light. A rule of thumb, meant to be broken, but would have been right here.

Nice Shot Kem, don't take the above wrong!

Dave,

I do believe your right. I had a very dark picture to start withexcept for the bar of light across the pond and his neck so I lightened it up but the detail looked terrible. Too bad, I really liked the composition of this shotjust not the results. I'll try your suggestions when I have a similar lite subject.

Thanks !

-Kent
