Below are some shots from last night's visit to the avocet pond. It had been raining all day but the sun broke just in time to get out for a few hours.

All shot with 400/5.6; shutter between 1/1600 and 1/3200; iso 400; aperture F/5.6

These birds seem highly territorial and if any other bird, including another avocet group, comes near to their area then a scuffle will ensure. These ones may have simply been playing, though:

Flight shots: these avocets check me out in a close up flyby, sometimes circling as many as three times whenever I get near, perhaps it's the parent checking to see if I'm a threat to the young, I'm not sure. In any event, once I've passed the test they seem almost to ignore me:

Some still shots

More dances

Thanks you all, really generous comments. I'm having a good time photographing these birds and it doesn't appear that it's going to end too quickly.

These are really nice shots. I wish I had this bird.

I wish I could say the same about my Willets. I am being victimised by them, nay, slandered. They follow me for hours. You would think they'd have better things to do?

Nice shots Normcar.

My favorite is the first one. That bird on the left looks he is just standing there defying gravity. I like the reflection shot as well. The combination of colors and composition make a very nice photo.

Avocets are tough subject to beat and it looks like you were having a blast getting these photos.
