While these birds skim on the open sea, they are happy at high tide to skim in the protected waters of a marsh. The less waves the better. These first two were shot in a marsh. Since it was near dawn I could only shoot at 250, bt since they often glide over the water...

These last three pictures were shot in the open sea but on a very quiet day. I was able to get up to 640, and the last shot, 800. Note the rather strange magnified reflection in the first shot below. Hmm?

Very nice series Dave. I think it would be quite funny to watch one of these birds learn to do this. In my head I see them catching the top of their bill and doing a somersault and a crash landing in the water.... of course I see alot of things in my head that may or may not ever happen...:?

LOL! I also wondered about that. They have a special hinge in their necks. When they hit an obstruction, the neck snaps down instantly. They don't even slow down....

They are also the ONLY bird in the world in which the upper beak is shorter than the bottom.

These are very unique captures here Dave. Very very good. And the info you add shows that you have a very good knowledge of all birds. And then on top of that you seem to have an unlimited source of birds to photograph and you are doing a very good job of it.

And right in the middle of a metropolitan area of 20 million people...

I've never seen so many different kinds of birds, and I've been in Central America.

Let me lknow when you come to New York

This is some great stuff. You did an excellent job of catching these guys in action.

Nice focus and froze the action really well.

I concur with the rest of the comments. Great shots Dave, and a very unusual bird. Thanks for sharing them......thekman.

Fantastic shots of an incredible bird. I'd love to wrap my lens around one of these birds. I've seen a few other posts lately of this bird in action and yours are second to none, nice job dave.
