They always seem to be gliding overhead, but never land, and come in black/white or red cap... :O

If it had an 8 foot wingspan, than it's probably a Magnificent Frigatebird.

I agree with DBB. Its a female Magnificent Frigatebird in breeding plumage (I think.)

Never seen one, but I'd like too.

I can't really measure their wingspan since they are always 'up there' :O - but here's another with a white head instead:







BTW how do you tell a male from a female???

The bird in this last picture is DEFINTIELY a juvenile Magnificent Frigate Bird. The adult male has a red patch at the throat, which they can blow up for advertising purposes.

As for the wing span. Any "REAL" photographer carries a tape measure, and with one hand waving a $20 bill, lures the bird in question to the ground, so that little details that I mention can be answered....:lol:
