Mom, meets the apples of her eye. Here are some kids to be proud of.

Pop takes a look...

Showing up later is the "kid." Looks a bit lost? Well here was the conversation I over heard from the parents

Pop: Look at him. Standing right out in the open. Might as well be wearing a big sign saying; "Eat me."

Mom: Look at this! He doesn't even know front from back. This is from YOUR side of the family!

A close up of "The Kid."

Dave, you've done a great job of documenting a short period in the lives of this rail family. I like the "human" commentary you've attributed to them also! :-)

BTW, how patient did you have to be for this family to be out in the open where they could be photographed?

That next to last shot is very endearing...

Rails are easily spooked, far more so than Herons. And then they have those days...

In this case I was actually out in the open. Both me and my White Balance Dog froze. I actually have about 75 images from that series of events. Every now and then they would pause and try to find where the clicking sound was from. Sun being behind my back helped a bit.

They are actually adapted for living inside the reeds, when you see them, they are easily mistaken for rabbits - sounds weird, but true.
