Default Starling

Starling at Musselburgh. Not quite as exotic a location as Andy's pub....

Good photo, I would attempt to blur the background more and use levels to add more contrast - just had a quick go with levels and it vastly improves it.

Great catch. The detail in the feathers is wonderful.

Thanks for this. Can you explain how I could go about bluring the background (in Photoshop elements).

It's not easy and takes patience. Basically you need to select the bird using the lasso tool and invert the selction so the background is active then use gaussian blur.

While selecting the bird use a small amount of feathering 4 or 5 pixels worth.

Don't forget to save the original and work on a copy.
