Hmmn...... this is causing me to think.

From mypersonal observations, the tail is usually either straight out or looks like a question mark. Of course this is in instances of them going about their dailyactivities and not dealing with danger.

Upon more thought, the times I have seen squirrels with their tails curled over the back is at times such as in this pic or in a sudden fight or flight.

I can recall that from seeing them crossing a road and almost getting hit by the giant road hawk .....(SUV etc It is a frantic dash to get away and the tail is placed in position over the back. Have also seen that when suddenly pounced upon by a dog and another intensely frantic move to evade.

Also believe that tail position occurs when in an unfriendlyconfrontation with other squirrels ( not the usual chase and play tag )
