This bird normally resides in Alaska and northern Canada. It was a rare sighting in western New York this past January.

I used my wife's little Kodak (3mp) camera to capture the images. The camera was hand held up to the eyepiece of a borrowedtelescope to capture the close-up.

The owl close-up (in the composite) was as it appeared throught the telescope. The owl was about 100 feet away.

This was our first time birding.

 maybe you should take a look at what you need to set yourself up for digiscoping. There are adapters that hook these little camera's up to scopes!

Nice shot!

Fun presentation! It sounds like you enjoyed your first birding experience. Soon you'll be investing in an SLR camera or a digiscope, a tripod, bird books, etc., etc.!!!!

Thanks everyone for your comments. It was a fun day - met some very nice people that were sharing a common interest - - very enthusiastic. Theywere also more than willing to share their knowledge about the owl which made our first outinga real success.

I will be looking into some better gear for future outings.

I didn't realize how creative this type of photography could be. It's nice to seeso many people paritcipating in this wildlife forum.
