I came upon this guy about an hour after the other. Where I shoot the actual area is only about a square mile, but the habitats vary tremendously by just walking a hundred yards. This Heron was out for rats. And probably blamed me for the lack of same.

Even so, while I'm sorry I disturbed him, I just love the mix in these images.

The last is a close crop of the preceding image, and I included it just so that you can see those claws. This little guy from time to time doubles as a Hawk...:-)

Nice shootin' Dave! Those claws look like they could do some damage. Do they dive for fish?.........cheers.....Don.

No, they walk around, quite methodically, hunting worms and fish. On the other hand I did meet one that sat in a branch over a grassy meadow and pounced on baby bunnies.

They'll also take rats and baby muskrats when they get the chance.
