i've had zero luck up till now in getting a dragonfly to sit still long enough for me to get a shot off... this fellow not only sat, he left and then came back again to the same perch! maybe he wanted to make sure i had my chance... 30D with Sigma 80-400, 1/250 @ f5.6, ISO 400...

What he is doing is called "Obelisking" Which is the intentional pointing of the abdomen into the sun's rays as a method of thermal regulation.

Three times to catch sitting Dragons

When wet ,they won't fly and will sit and dry themselves.

When obelisking, they tend to sit awhile .

When on "Post", when a male stakes out a parcel of territory to watch for females.Even if you spook him and he leaves his post just stand still and chances are he will return to the exact same spot. If you have your camera prefocused on the local you are most certain to get a shot.

If you invest some time and watch these quick targets you will learn the behaviour and increase the number of keepers you get.
