I use the 80-400 mostly hand held. The tripod has thescope on it, I'll have to change around once in a while. (Scope stops at f13)

Depending on your lighting try and shoot at F8 to F11... it is said to be at it's sharpest at F11 on a tripod! Also, distortion on this lens is amongst the lowest available in a zoom lens... another thing if you can shoot at 80mm to 300mm vs 400mm the VR on this lens works brilliantly, but at 400mm its still hard to get perfect images at slower speeds (hand held).

Nice shots Mike! I see you use the D200 and was thinking about that camera but have decided to sell my 300MM and order the 200MM 400MM f4 VR. We've got about 2 more weeks of hummers here in GA. Happy shooting.

The D200 is so nice, if you choose to get one down the road you will not be disapointed. I get down to Georgia yearly, I have relatives that live in Carrollton.

Your lens choice is nice!!

And yet ANOTHER EXCELLENT shot, Mike!! Safe to assume that this was taken recently? Sure hope so ... I'm still trying to get some while they are hanging around here (east of St. Louis)

Thanks for the post!

Amazing ... with the gleam in its eye, the detail of the feathers, the DOF is just awesome, Mike! Have you considered doing calendars or any of the stock photo sites like fotolia or any of those?? You could be making some cash off of these, Mike, they are that high of quality, seriously! But I'm sure I don't have to tell you that & I'll shut up & mind my own business now!:G

Thanks Wadue, your very kind! I actually have a promotional company that I'm working with and a calender for the following year will be happening as well as some other outdoor "ducky" things. I'm out the door to the Vikings/Bears football game. :-)
