The Black-crowned Night-Heron is widely distributed throughout North America, South America, Eurasia and Africa.

Although they frequent wooded swamps, ponds, lakes and tropical mangroves, they have also been found to take advantage of rice fields and other diverse habitats. They keep close to water and vegetation such as reeds, trees and mangroves where they roost and take cover.

Great shots buzzsaw!! You're doing an excellent job in getting close to these skittish birds. Are you using your boat, blind or just paying them to model for you?

The exposure is great on#2with details in the white and black. Wish you could have caught him without all the limbs but still a great photo.

Ron, I bet Mike's thinking the same thing. Mike is the second one a crop - great shots. I take it this is a rare find, from the sounds of it.

I was in my boat, it seems they are somewhat more comfortable towards people, I don't see many of them around either, and I cloned out a branch on the blue area on it's head, but the bottom one was too much work.... While I was taking the pics I was thinking DAMN BRANCH!! So you pegged it when you commented that I probably didn't want it in the pic either. :-)

I did you fill flash on a few of the shots, but these weren't the ones. I do use fill flash on cloudy days and naturally when the sun is high and the subject has shadows.

I really like the closeup Mike. Nice job. I wish they would swoop through my area...would like to see one for myself.
