Color has been handled here so I won't jump in but to help Steve out with the handles here is my way:

A combo of levels and cureves with a mask to lighten up the hardware to match as close as possible to the car body work. You will find you need to blend back in the shadow and highlights with a extra mask work on the level and curve layers. Then I use a new layer to apply the paint.

They definitely look better Creeduk. I would appreciate you going through the precise steps you made to get the result, for my benefit, (still getting to grips with masks),as well as Lanze's.

Thanks

Stevekin.

Steps:

Duplicate layer

apply levels to lighten handles but don't overdo it as you will loose definition

apply curves usually for this job just pull the RGB curve up and out to form a smooth curve, this keeps the definition and closer to a color we can paint over.

on this one I added a second levels but this time just for the mirror, the mask starts as all black and paint in white where the mirror if, then start to smooth out the shadows (pic posted to show example)

Finally on the duplicated layer a use of very liberal burn and dodge this is done after the paint layer which for me was done with a color mode layer opacity about 70%. Using a mask to cover areas not required, like the black strip, the windows etc.

If you wish to do the trim as well, this requires a bit more modification as the black trim shows no reflection as they are a textured matte type finish. A body colored trim would reflect so either a lighter yellow (almost white) or a dodge to add the sun reflect on the top. In this image the resolution is low so the trim can look pixilated.
