trying to learn PhotoShop...

How can I improve this pic? whatever I change to make the trees visible, the sky and the snow become overexposed.....

(Minolta A200 - Default Settings)

Thanks!

I lightened up the shadows with the highlight/shadow adjustment tool in Elements 3.

I used the High Dynamic Range tool in Photoimpact for this one. Basically a one button fix, though I did tweak the levels as well.

The best way to get both shadow and highlight detail in these kinds of pictures, is to take bracketed exposures and blend them later in PP.

Or, using PS or Elements, select just the dark area (trees), give it a feather of around 50 to 100 pixels, this enables the change to blend in,then adjust the levels on the selection. This won't touch anything that is not selected, leaving the sky and mountainsexactly how they are.

Alternatively, to give you more control over your changes, once the selection and feather is made, click on 'Create new fill or adjustment layer' at the bottom of the layers palette and choose levels. Perform the changes, click OK, then you can go back to this and change the levels if you wish at any time.
