As I have stated I am new to the board but was looking at some old stuff you guys worked on and thought I would take a shot at some of them. I know that gellis1 had ask for a black background but I opted  for a more natural background as I told you before I am a sucker for colors. :-)

Nitro,

Very nice job with the 'natural' background.

Also when I get back to my computer at home, and have PS in front of me I can probably help you if someone else doesnt help you before then.

If you used a mask to do the desaturated background, well thats the same way you do the DOF. Make a mask to keep the bird in color and focused and ake the other layer desaturated and blurred. The mask should look like so. Spend more time on it and it gets more acurate, use some grey along the outline of the bird (black lower opacity) and reduce the DOF near the bird.

Should look something like this. DOF is exagerated here though.

The only problem with doing that way is that you blurred the chair too which is foreground.

Another way to do it is simply create another layer, completely desaturate bottom layer and set gaussian blur how you like it, then just erase the parts of the top layer that you want blurred.
