I love this shot but the tree bark is too light, how do I get definition and darken it without a fake look?? Ive tried a few times but just seem to keep stuffing it up

Well, this one one looks ok to me. But feel free to totally dismiss it out of hand if you think it's cr*p. I know you would .

Add a layer mask, click the layer thumbnail to make it active again. Decrease the brightness by around -20 and increase the contrast to around +20.

Now click the layer mask and using black, paint over the bird and background to bring them back to what they were.

I also used the burning tool set to midtones to darken it a bit, maybe too much, but you get the idea.

Same as above until you get to the burning. The first one looks a bit too much, but some like it that way.

Set the burn tool to Highlights and the opacity of the brush to 15/20 %

Thanks, that gives me an Idea where I have been going wrong:-)I really hated the pale bark, it almost looks like the highlights are blown out but it is fixable as you have shown.:-)
