Can anyone "fix" this photo for me? It's of my great-grandma and I told my grandma I would try to fix it up a bit for her and get it printed out (4x6). I've tried (photoshop elements 2) and my results were not that great. If anyone is up to it, I'd really appreciate it!

Niki

I would scan the photo at a higher resolution and play with the quality to come up right to the edge of the 250k allowed by the board.

The image has to be trimmed to straighten out the bottom. And I would suppose you want the edges trimmed a tad as well. You are at a resolution and quality that a few more pixels and a slightly higher quality will give you a better print.

I did some trials in the free Irfanview. Scanning at 1100 X 1351 and saving at 90% quality still keeps you at 225k. That will make a decent 4 X 6 even after it is trimmed a little.

I thought I scanned it at 300dpi (the highest my scanner will scan). I can retry it though.

There are artifacts from the low quality compression but there isn't anything to do for it. You should have scanned as a TIFF and converted to JPG in a viewer or editor that allows a higher quality.

Many photofinishers will make 4 ½ X 6 prints. That would work better for this photo. I hear Wal Mart does that size. Many of the online processors will make them that size for you. 4 X 6 just doesn't work very well for that photo IMO. A 3 X 4 would probably look even better since your original was evidently even smaller. This is proportioned properly for a 4 ½ X 6 or a 3 X 4.

If you need 4 X 6 for an album you can use this. Resolution is getting a little low. It isn't as imaginative as yame's crop but I'm too lazy to draw in body parts.

I have a JPG repair plug in. It softens the image a little but takes out some of the artifacts. Not sure which I like best.
