I saw the difference in the ISO 1600 comparison between the FZ35 and the FZ40 as a very narrow/small comparison. The FZ40 has a bit more contrast and perhaps a hair more warmth in the WB. Both of those elements can be taken care of in the camera menu set-up.

I have found ISO 800 to be very good on the FZ35, and just not quite as good on the FZ 40, unless the resolution is reduced a notch.
