My experience of the "DR" EXR mode (using Auto DR) is that it seems to be most effective when it is really needed- which I guess is the way it should be.
Strangely- and thankfully- it seems to lift the shadows when the highlights are well within limits- and it focuses on highlight retention when they're close to "blowing".
It certainly wouldn't be as effective as bracketing exposures and "HDR-ing" them- but definitely has its use as a quick shooter in challenging light when pressed for time.
It would have been nice for Fuji to include a HDR facility on the X-S1- especially as it's fast becoming a "standard issue" on most cameras spec' sheet...
