When Im doing HDR I usually go to EXPOSURE and then set the Exposure a little brighter and with Gamma Correction set to around 80 it both pinches up the highlights and shadows slightly giving back the snap that Photomatix takes out when it makes the final file. THe use of the Exposure will depend on how bright your highlights are. You dont want to blow them out any more than you have to.
