The problem remained all year until 2 weeks ago. As explained I had no solution from the HP helpdesk, or HP online support. But on another forum recently I noticed a link to http://www.hpphoto.com
, a different site from the earlier ones mentioned.
An option there to 'Get support & trouble shooting' directed me to scanjet/errors/IE script errors, with advice for the specific script errors, to download "MS data access components"
I did that & installed the 5mb file. The HP scanner now works fine. Apparently IE can become corrupted, and this was the problem for the HP software.
Thanks for your help. I've detailed this solution that may help any others with a similar problem.
