Try this, im guessing there was a fair bit of sunlight..

a slower shutter... maybe 1/125 ish, ISO 100, and take as many shots as you can in a burst. I take about 6 per subject and usually manage to get the right look i want. Also, watch the lighting (umbrella shading top half), this will affect your cameras thinking and may result in too much contrast.

Try portrait mode, or auto mode until your comfortable taking shots of people. I still use auto, as its so much easy to focus on the subjects pose, rather than your cameras settings.
