One of the faster f2.8 zooms would be better bet for you. Nikon and Canon have some very expensive ones, but the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (available in both Nikon and Canon mounts) is a fine lens indeed at a very reasonable price.

And a decent flashgun that will cope with a diffuser and bounce.

IMO comparative reviews tend to exagerate tiny differences that in the real world might as well not exist. Both of the cameras you are considering will do an excellent job for you.

Go try them out at a store and see which one feels better to you.
