I hope you don't mind, but I played a bit with your last picture, just to see what I could come up with. If you object, please let me know and I'll remove it from here. I actually didn't do much, I brought your picture into Lightroom, then added some fill light (which lightens the dark places), then used the curve tool to further lighten the dark tones. That seemed to blow out some of the white what wasn't blown out, so I used the recovery slider to tone down the whites a bit. Then I added a little smart sharpen in CS2. Don't know that I made much difference. It's a bit difficult to judge - my monitor at home is quite a bit brighter than my work monitor and I'm not sure which one is "right." I really like the picture (I can imagine running my hands through his fur).
