The ospreys have declined in numbers over here for unknown reasons. Haven't seen any in seven or eight years.

I often see ospreys posted here. Are they still common in America?
Ospreys have been increasing here since DDT was banned. Their populations had suffered (as did the Bald Eagles, Perigrines, Marsh Harriers, Pelicans, and Cormorants, to name a few of the hardest hitfish and bird-eatingpredators, all of which are recovering) from the effects of metabolites of DDT which interfered with the transfer of calcium to the egg shells (which then collapsed), and also affected their breeding behavior. If what I have heard is correct, I would suspect declining fish populations and/or pollutants in the Baltic Sea with contaminating fish there.
