Sounds like a color-management issue. When you say lighten the photo, is that so your print isn't too dark? Do you use color management (i.e. is your monitor calibrated, do you use printer profiles for the paper you use) or are you tweaking the print until it looks good on your monitor then letting your printer control the output? Are all your photos too dark? How about in other image viewing programs, still too dark?
