Default Star cross screen filter

Ok, should I get a 4 pt or 6 pt (or 8pt) filter and why?

Just looking for opinions.

Depends on what effect you want/need/like. Personally I bought a Cokin 057 which is a Star4 just to try it, but have never used it yet!

You should get all of the above! There is no right filter. Each has diffrent effects. It goes beyond the number of points. There are filters with difrent spacing between the grids that cause the effect and it causes diffrent effect. I just moved so everything is packed, but the 2mm 4pt I have is good for landscape shots (a city at night), but not good for closeup, like across the street as is shows bands in the points. Also, some can rotate like a circular polerizer allowing you to tune the points to the composition, and others are fixed. There are also special efffects filters that do variatin on the star effect. So what should you get and why? Look online for comparison shots between 4, 6, and 8 pt filters and see the difrence in efefct. Personally I think the 4pt have a more natural effect but 6 or 8 point have a smoother image, and it really depend on what you are shooting?
