I am new to photography and don't understand the lensmath yet. Which size add-on wide anglelenstakes a widerpicture given the same distance....... a .5x or a .8x?

The .5x will give you a wider field of view than the .8x. It's a multiplication factor. If your camera has a 38mm wide angle (35 mm equivalent) then multiply it by .5 and you get 19mm. The .8 will give you ~30mm.
