Default x-200/300mm zooms for canon 300D?

I am a fairly new owner of a Canon 300D/Digi Rebel looking to buy a useful zoom lens for landscape and wildlife shots to supplement the standard 18-55mm lens.

I am considering the Canon EF 4.0 L 70-200mm which seems to be widely regarded as a great lens but not sure it will give me the length I need.

I hike a lot so I'm also looking for something relatively light weight and compact - I've seen advertisements for a new Tamron 28-300 XR 'travelzoom' that appears to have received a EISA Award in 2002-2003.

Does anybody have any information on the latter lens or can any one recommend another lens that might meet my requirements?

Any help much appreciated.

You might want to ask in the Canon DSLR lens forum. Someone there might have experience with the lens and maybe even used it with the DRebel.
