Default Looking for telephoto lens for my XSI

I have had my XSI for about 8 months now and so far I am enjoying the experience. I still consider myself a novice beginner so I am looking for guidence. Camera came with a 18-55mm lens. This December we are going on a cruise and I was wanting to purchase a telephoto lens that will be an upgrade.
As far as shooting I dont do any action shots (movement) just portraits and stills(Landscape scenery building etc). I have been doing some research and reading on the lens but a lot of info to process.

ef-s 55-250, very sharp lens, and not to expensive. Better then the tamron and sigma 70-300. Much sharper.

The Canon 55-250 that shoturtle mentioned would be a good choice as a general purpose telephoto zoom lens. If you wanted to shoot sports/action/wildlife, there are better choices, but they'd cost more too.

I agree ... go for Canon 55-250 ... along with your kit lens' focal length, 55-250 kinda "completes" the most used focal range.
