Can someone explain how a teleconverter is supposed to work?

I've added a 2x to my Canon G3 (4x zoom), and figured I would get 2 x 4 or 8x zoom. But that's not what it looks like.

Thanks,

Dano

According to the specifications of your Canon G3 digicam its lens
have a range of effective SLR focal lenght from 35mm to 140mm hence the 4x zoom (140 = 4 X 35). Now the the 2x teleconverter doubles the focal lenght, thus with the teleconverter your camera now has a range of SLR effective FL from 70mm to 280mm but the zooming factor is still 4 (280 = 4 x 70 ). Usually when using a teleconverter the camera lens has to be set at maximum FL (the T setting) otherwise one has a vignetted image. In practice this means that the zooming capability is really not usable in this case since one can only use the lens at max zoom with the teleconverter.

I must have bought a set of cheap glass lenses in a tube. I'm not getting anywhere near 280 mm with the teleconverter.

It's a GroBartig 2.5X, that I bought in Singapore. It looked fine in the store, but it doesn't seem to have much magnification.

It's more objective if you take 2 pics and compare to conclude if it's a 2.5x or not

I have the Bower 2.0x Digital Tele Lens and the magnification is exactly 1.32. I have no idea how this magnification corresponds to the 2.0x printed on the device.
