And the cats expression. That is what really does it for me in the first picture. The paw and the use of DOF (which is great) only enhances the expression on the cat's face.

In the second one, instead of a peaceful pose, you get the alert "I'm going to bat at the camera" feeling. Different style all together.

Another reason I like the first one better is that the background is a little busy in the second one.

You hit the nail on the head with the kitten's attitude in the second one (btw - Kaz has 2 cats - the younger often referred to as "the kitten"). He was relaxing peacefully until that darned camera got in his face.

The last time I tried such a picture, I got the shot off a split second before Monsieur Puss plastered himself to the lens. Both cat and I ended up laughing.
