A veteran of the 2000 Cow Parade, tucked away in front of an East Village brownstone..

I'm not sure whether this qualifies as a pet..

I've walked down this block a number of times and never noticed the cow. I don't think he's quite life-size, but he's not too small either. From the sidewalk, this is what you see unless you go up to the fence:

I was inside the gate to the doorway area, standing on a narrow ledge about 3 feet up, praying that I wouldn't fall while photographing the head.

Maybe they keep him concealed behind bushes so no one tries to vandalize him. The fence is pretty high.

Now THERE'S a lawn ornament! If I could wake up each morning, look out the window, and see such a sophisticated cow, my every day would begin properly. The second shot, in particular, is really nice.

Do you suppose this one is related? This one is in front of the recently opened Children's Museum in Portland, OR.

LOL. The Cow Parade was a charity event. They gave blank cows to artists who decorated them using various themes. They were displayed around the city for several months, then auctioned off for charity. Several other cities have done this, in some case using other animals.

When they were on display before the auction, it was always surprising to turn a corner and see one. Many were more elaborate than this one. There is a website which sells small models of them.

I have seen this done in Portland and Seattle. In Seattle, it was pigs. There was a pig on just about every corner in downtown Seattle. Some were pretty wild.

Cows were used in Portland. There weren't as many cows as there were pigs in Seattle but the paint jobs were just as wild!

The "cow" in front of the Portland Childrens Museum is a permanent sculpture. I knew it wasn't related but I thought the colors gave it some "kinship!"
