One of the more interesting sights I got to see on last weekend's visit to the Virginia Coast was the settlement at Jamestown. There, officials have reconstructed an early 17th century wood and thatch house overlooking the James River, using only contemporary architecture and techniques.

The building is certainly not of the type that the first settlers would have used, but probably would have been built around 1625 or so, after the settlement was fairly well established. It's a large, multi-roomed dwelling that would have housed more than one family.

As can be seen on the previous photo, one of the more interesting aspects was a wood chimney that opened above a fire pit. I'm not sure what it would have been lined with to prevent fires. My assumption would have been mud.

The modern builders have used large iron nails for much of the joinery, although a combination of notch joints andpeg construction would have been more likely since importing nails from England would have been so expensive.

The peg joinery was used fairly well exclusively in reconstructing the fence that surrounded the settlement.
