![]() ![]() The brothers built this aqueduct to bring water to the fields at Espada. This one still works and is still being used to irrigate fields. When the Corps of Engineers hundreds of years later lowered the level of the San Antonio river, most of the system became useless. The landowners who depended on them, sued the Corps. At first, the Army laughed at them. Then someone explained the intricacies of Royal grants to water rights, and the laws of the Republic of Texas, and the treaty by which Texas became a state in the Union, and then they stopped laughing. A number of poor farmers became rather wealthy thereby. |
