The building is huge, taller than the US capitol, if you count the zinc statue on the dome.
The structure is limestone, faced with granite. Not as ornate or so elegantly set with carved stone as the Iowa capitol, but impressive, just for being big. In Texas, if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing. This is the gallery of the Senate chambers: ![]() |

![]() ![]() This is Congress Street, leading up to the Capitol. In 1993, the Ku Klux Klan, asserting their right to free assembly, marched up this street to the Capitol Building. About 200 showed up in pointy hoods and regalia. The citizens of Austin gave them a proper welcoming; as they marched up the street, 3,000 to 5,000 people stood along the route, and as they passed, hundreds of them turned their back to them, and dropped their pants. It had a somewhat wavelike effect, which was supplimented by the crowd singing, "if you're happy and you know it, moon the Klan." |
