I've recently begun what will be an ongoing project of photographing church steeples. I found these two on a recent trip to Pennsylvania (USA).

The first one is atop a little wooden church in a smal rural town.

The second is atop an old church in the historic district of Gettysburg, site of a significant battle in the 19th century American Civil War.

That's a cool idea for a collection. Given the large number of regional, historical, and denominational differences, it should be quite an interesting project.

One of the sad things about steeples, is that few of them are now being built. Most of the new ones are fiberglass. I used to have a client who made hot tubs, but yoiu could special order a beautiful white steeple from him, at a fraction of the cost of building one.

In my town, the Ukranian Catholics (uniate members of the Roman Catholic Church, but with their own, Byzantine liturgy) used to go to the local Catholic Church, because there was no Ukranian Church.

In few years, there were enough of them to form a parish, so they purchased a Baptist church which had lost a lot of members. In a short time, the white steeple came down, and there was a blue onion dome, surmounted by a small gold cross.

Fiberglass. I've often wondered if my old client had branched out.

As we see, each one of them has its own aesthetical merit. So, it's a good idea to have a comparative collection as Barbarian stated before.Btw, Imust say that I am surprised to hear how people could be that practical, making steeples out of fiberglass!

A google search on "fiberglass steeples" turns up quite a few companies now.Because the fiberglass is transparent at microwave frequencies, a church can make a little money by selling space for a cellular telephone antenna.
