I just got a Mh-C401FS charger and Sanyo 2700 rechargeable batteries. Charger instructions say about 5 hours at slow and 100 minuters at fast to charge batteries. What I am reading on these forums seem to indicte that these particularbatteries need to be charged 14-18 hours at least for first time charging. Can anyone give me the real answer?

Personally, I'd let the charger decide when they're fully charged. This is a microprocessor controlled "smart" charger that uses a pulse type technology. I'd use the slow charge mode.

With some chargers, you can simply restart a second charge cycle again if you wanted to try that. But, it may go straight to a trickle cycle again (that's going to vary by charger and I don't know how this one is going to behave).

Chances are, you'll see better battery efficiency after more than one discharge and recharge after you use them more.
