Hi all. I recently bought a new Canon Powershot camera that takes an NB-5L lithium-ion battery pack. I want to get a spare to carry around in case the first battery runs out at an inopportune time, but the official Canon ones cost around $35. I see that there are a lot of third-party brands that cost less than $10. Could anyone recommend a particular third-party brand that is generally well-reviewed and trusted?

I'll also be buying a case at the same time, so if anyone would like to recommend a nice case for ultracompacts, please do so. Thanks.

You can buy rechargeable Canon NB-5L batteries at a much cheaper price on http://www.my-batteries.com/digital-...anon-nb-5l.htm. I picked up an extra nb-5lbattery for $16.34. ( 1150mAh )

Regarding the NB-5L batteries, search Amazon and see what you find. I bought an Lenmar NB-4L for my SD1000 and it's been working great for a year and a half.

This one seems to be getting favorable reviews on Amazon:

For a case, I have 2 recommendations:

Lowepro Apex 10 AW or Tamrac 5680 if you have a SD1xxx series camera.

Lowerpro Apex 20 AW or Tamrac 5686 if you have the SD7,8,9 series camera.

I have the Tamrac 5680 and the Apex 10 AW for my SD1100 and both are great. The 5680 does not have a compartment for other accessories, but offers unparalleled protection and easily fits on a belt. You can't go wrong with either case.

I am considering an 880is. Do you know if I can use the NB3L batteries from my SD500 as backups?

If the SD880 IS uses the NB-3L, sure. I use the NB-4L from my SD1000 as a spare for my SD1100 IS.

Thanks for the prompt reply. The 880is uses the NB5L. I was wondering if my NB3Ls will work as back ups even though they are lower mAh? I imagine that it is mostly a matter of physical size and connection location.

I would assume the NB-3L won't fit in the new camera if it uses the NB-5L. But you can get a 3rd party NB-5L on Amazon and other sites for a greatly reduced price.

You can get those nb-5l equivalent or nb-5l replacement by google. But i don't think choosing a replacement nb-5l battery is a good idea as those reviews said.
BTW at http://www.digital-camera-batteries.net/canon/nb-5l.htm the nb-5l battery would cost 16.8 .
