I'm a little confused. This issue spans several devices from cameras to portable DVD players. Some people tell me to top off; others to run down all the way first, yet the batteries seem similar. I don't want to risk memory effect.

For instance...on a lith-ion 4400 7.4 volts, I'm told to run it all way the down every time to avoid memory effect. I also have a On a lith-ion 7.2 volts, 5400.

On the other hand, my PDA (TREO) also seems to have a lith ion battery. But they tell me to top it off frequently.

So, what's the deal? Any ideas?

The general consensus appears to be on li-ion batteries is to top off. Every 30 or so charges you do a deep charge. This class of battery tends to last based on the number of complete recharge discharge cycles. Topping off seems to cheat that a bit.

This is in contrast to the older nimh/nicads where each time you should completly drain the battery before charging. If in doubt go by the manufacturers recomendations.

The absolute worse thing that you can do to the newer li-ion batteries is allow them to sit unused in a camera or like for months. If they go below the safe to recharge threshold you will need to buy a new battery. Other than that they seem to behave themselves well. :-)

That was my original understanding. The maker of one, however, told me there is no memory effect "hium battery does not have any memory. You can charge and recharge whenever you feel and it will not affect the memory."

The maker of another said to run it down every time.

WOnder why I'm confused?
