Default Kodak DX4330 and non Kodak NiMH

I recently bought a Kodak DX4330 and 2 1600mAh NiMH rechargeables, not the Kodak pack.

I fully charged the NiMH's, I put them inside the camera, but to my surprise, the camera complained that the battery is low just after a few shots. Taking the batteries out and connecting them to a small 2.2V bulb and a volt meter revealed that the batteries still had a lot of juice stored; the bulb was lit for at least 3 hours. Though, the voltage was rather low, about 2.4-2.5V compared to the 3V required.

I am aware that the Kodak provided NiMH pack has a little something that slides the switch located inside the battery compartment. Could that switch make the camera aware that the battery is NiMH and make it not complain too early about the low voltage? Has anyone experienced that?

Thank you,
