There seems to be a problem with rechargeable CRV3 voltage and the istDS camera. Pentax told me that Japan has no comment on these batteries. Moby and Delkin state that their battery performs with a safe voltage tolerance. Anyone know if it will work safely? To me, Li-ion is the way to go.

Pentax DOES have an official statement about RCRV3 type batteries and it is that you are NOT supposed to use them because some RCRV3 batteries exceed the 3v limits and can damage the camera. This is true for all *ist D and *ist DS cameras.

See the bottom of page 4 of our *ist DS review:

I know, I read the review, but, I read that the main objection was thatthe RCRV3 batteries could produce 3.7 volts each and result in over 7 volts in the ist. I could see where this would be a problem. Thomas Distributing is currently displaying in their ads that Moby and Delkin make an RCRV3 rechargeable that can maintain 3.1-3.2 V. I have other equipment that uses the Li-ion system (proprietary battery) and they work just great. It looks like developement is so close that it would be a shame if the ist couldn't take advantage the Li-ion system. Who knows, maybe someday. I'll keep watching. Thanks.

There was a thread where somebody tested RCRV-3's and found the voltage to be w/i the voltage of batteries traditionally used. My connection is slow today, otherwise I'd do a search for it.

I bought a set of the Moby RCR-V3's from Thomas Distributing recently.
I charged both batteries, and then tested them before putting them in my *ist DS. Each battery read 4.2v!!! I didn't want to take the risk , so I sent them back.

Take a voltmeter to your AC power supply once.
