From what you are writing it looks like with 4 AA cells the charging current will be below 500 mA. The problem is that at this low current it is difficult if not impossible to detect the end of charge properly, which may lead to overcharging. Try it with 2 and 4 cells and check how warm the cells get when ready

I see. So rather 1-2 batteries a time then.

I charged two but I didn't pick them out when they were ready. Maybe 15-20 minutes later, but the charger has got this trickle mode that charges them a little when they are there too. Well, they weren't any hot at least.

One thing, I accidentally put the same pair of batteries into the charger. The led was not on for too long... maybe a few minutes. But when I picked them out, they were a bit warm. Not hot, but warmer than normal room temperature.
