As far as I understand, I need to charge and discharge these new batteries (plus another set I have on the side) about three times to get them to their max operating level. Is this correct?

My new Fuji S9000 also has a function called 'discharge rechargeable batteries' and the camera manual recommends using this to discharge new NimH batteries before putting them to use. Is it a good idea to use this, any better than discharging the batteries by using them to shoot pictures?

Any advice appreciated, I am an absolute beginner! :-)

Ron,

Just charge them and use them. They will discharge by taking pictures, zooming, flashing, etc. After you recharge them several times, you will notice an increased capacity. Assuming you have a smart charger, leave them on trickle charge overnight to ensure a complete charge.

Good luck with your new camera!

I agree. Being a beginner, you are going to want to use your camera a lot for a while, to try out the options and find what works best for you. Take a lot of trial shots, some in auto mode, and look at the EXIF for the ones that look best. This will help you learn the camera and incidentally use several charge cycles of your batteries. Bugrit, thanks! I get to snapping photos then!

Incidentally, the batteries are Ansmann 2400mAhPhoto batteries and the charger is Ansmann Photo Cam III.

IMHO very bad choice. Batteries tend to be leaky

You mean the Ansmann in particular or batteries in general?
