Default choosing a charger and buying one in the UK

Hi all

Is there much to choose between different chargers and if so what should I look out for.

Also any suggestions on best place to buy one (I am in the UK) is there a better type of store to buy one ? ie Camera shop, general electronics shop, Maplins, Comet etc

Thanks

Maha fast chargers seem to be popular, only prob I found, is if you've got BIG 2100MaH batts, you seem to have to buy a charger with 1500-1800 batts included. So when you put in your BIG batts, the fast charge takes 20-40% longer! they're just being meaney on the switcher power capacity. Last time I did some research, I found it difficult to buy a charger without the smaller batts, which I didn't want. So I've decided to make my own. The faster the rate of fast charge, the more sophisticated and expensive they are (and the hotter your batts get!).

I'd make sure you get one that charges and falls back to trickle charge. Then you can leave batts in all the time (NiMh batts have fairly high self discharge over time)

Haven't checked their stock, but as you're in UK there are some benefits of using these people for mail order:

Tip from me - do some thorough research before you buy! There is a very wide variety of chargers available out there and it's easy to end up with one that doesn't suit your needs properly. Make sure you get one with automatic cutoff (most FAST chargers do this) and also consider whether or not you'll want to travel abroad with it. THAT opens up a whole new can of worms! The 'Energy8' by Ansmann seems to get good recommendations, BUT it'll cost you about GBP50!

Maplins are doing a promo on a Uniross Ultra Fast charger and a set of 4x 2000mAh AA's. 25 quid inc.

Not a bad price considering its a high street shop.

It has an auto sensing circuit which will cut off when fully charged and an emergancy cut off that will stop charging after 2hr 30 mins incase the batteries arent holding their charge properly.

It also comes with a 12v car adapter so can be used anywhere any time in the world.
