I have a big day ahead of me and I'm trying to avoid buying 3 infolithium batteries at 60 bucks a pop. Can I build a 7-cell NiMH or NiCd battery to supply extra power, or will the camera die once the voltage starts to sag?

Making external batterybacks so that you can take cells off from them is harder because amount of contacts causes extra resistance.
Also cheap sealed lead acid battery could work well if 6V is enough, but looks like Sony doesn't tell what input voltage should be.

But how about this one, those have worked very well in very power hungry Minolta 7-serie.

(just do Google search with DPS-9000 to find shops)

Thanks, that's pretty damn slick. Unfortunately I couldn't get one in time so I'll be hacking one together on my own. I think I'll do a writeup on it when it's finished.
One concern I did have: The pack would get in the way of the lens swivelling downward. It's a feature I use a lot since I do a bit of concert photography.
