I was playing around with this little magnetic steel ball I found the other day. It has nice prismatic colors and lots of blue so I figured....

Exactly what is that, and how big is it? Just guessing by looking at the reflection, I'd say 1-3 inches but I might be totally wrong. It looks a bit corroded but that adds character to it.

Im not sure what it is. Its about 1/2" diameter. Its magnetic and has prismatic colors to it. I found it on the floor of Best Buy. When I put it on a flat mirror it starts spinning around until it lines itself up with the earths magnetic field and comes to a stop in the same spot every time. By the way, its a macro HDR.

That's really cool, a portable compass. Maybe it's one of the lost "Seeing" stones from Mordor. Sauron is watching you. Be careful.
Sorry, I just re-watched The Lord of the Rings- "The Return of the King" the other night. I like the subject and treatment of your photo. Well done. Steve

I've seen some sets of magnetized balls for creating unusual shapes but those balls are less than 1/4 in in diameter. I think a lot of them have been taken off the market because of the choking hazard to small children.
Bynx, do you think this might be from such a set, only a larger size? Cal |

No, not from the set you are talking about. Ive seen those. They are small 1/8" magnetized stainless steel balls. This ball is 1/2" and looks like its been in a fire and has many colors like those seen in heated metal. I think it takes a neat image.

I think it a great image, Bynx. The reflection on the the ball and on the mirror add quite a bit to the image.

Thanks for your comments. To get an idea how large the ball is see my post in the Close-up forum. American and Canadian dimes are the same size.
