A Flash in the Pan*
![]() ![]() * "Keep your powder dry or you will have a flash in the pan". This is an expression denoting failure that dates from the days of flintlock musketry - powder in the pan (a receptacle along side the base of the barrel) was ignited by sparks from the flint striking a part called the frizzen; that in turn was supposed to ignite the powder charge in the barrel through a small hole next to the pan. If the powder in the pan went off (flashed) but the charge in the barrel did not ignite and the gun failed to fire, you had misfire, or "a flash in the pan." This and/or the flame coming out of the muzzle when the gun did fire may have been the origin of the term "gun fire."

Thanks Saly, Harriet and Cal for looking and commenting.
I added an explanation of the term to the first panel for those not familiar with it.
