Fire or Heat -- Hot Air Balloon

We have both fire and heat here. The fire heats the air which lifts the balloon.

It is a wonder that thing doesn't just burn right up

I have no idea what these balloons are made to be able to withstand that flame

This shot does seem to show the inner workings as a scene from Dante's Inferno.
Fortunately the flame is not supposed to touch the surface of the balloon otherwise all hell breaks loose.
I understand the lower portions of the balloon are coated in fire resistant material.

All technical stuff aside nice shot of the business end of this balloon.

The only thing between me and disaster is a gossamer fabric exposed to the potential of great heat... scares the, umm, s__t outa me. Good capture!

Thanks, all, for the nice comments. This was taken at a balloon festival held every year in Tigard, Oregon, just a few miles from my home. More specifically, this was taken at night during their "Nightglow" event where a group of balloons are tethered and kept inflated by periodically firing the burner. The glowing balloons are nothing short of spectacular at night.

Some day I'll make it to the beginning of a balloon launching and try my hand at this type of shot. I always love everyone else's pictures and can only imagine what a wonderful scene it must be.

Cal... do you have any pictures of the whole scene... sounds spectacular and I'd (we'd) love to see them!

Here are a couple shots of the Nightglow event:
